Institutional Review Board (IRB) Approvals for the Health Information National Trends Survey (HINTS)

HINTS 7 (2024)

The HINTS 7 general population survey was designated "exempt research” under 45 CFR 46.104 and approved by the Westat IRB on May 2, 2023 (Project # 6632.05.73), with a subsequent amendment approved on January 29, 2024 (Amendment ID #4112). HINTS 7 also received a “Not Human Subjects Research” determination from the NIH Office of IRB Operations on February 8, 2024 (IRBID: IRB002042).

HINTS 6 (2022)

The HINTS 6 general population survey was designated "exempt research” under 45 CFR 46.104 and approved by the Westat IRB on May 10, 2021 (Project # 6632.03.51), with a subsequent amendment approved on November 24, 2021 (Amendment ID #3597). HINTS 6 also received a “Not Human Subjects Research” determination from the NIH Office of IRB Operations on August 16, 2021 (iRIS reference number: 562715).

HINTS SEER (2021)

The HINTS-SEER pilot study underwent expedited review by the Westat IRB and was approved as an amendment to HINTS 5 on May 22, 2020 (Project Number 6048.14, Amendment ID #3212). The participating SEER registries obtained independent IRB approvals for their participation in the study.

HINTS 5, Cycles 1-4 (2017-2020)

The HINTS 5 general population survey underwent expedited review and was approved by the Westat IRB on March 28, 2016 (Project #6048.14). HINTS 5 also received a “Not Human Subjects Research” determination from the NIH Office of Human Subjects Research on April 25, 2016 (Exempt #13204).

HINTS-FDA, Cycles 1 and 2 (2015, 2017)

HINTS-FDA underwent expedited review and was approved by the Westat IRB on July 14, 2014 as an amendment to HINTS 4 (Project #8861.01.04). HINTS-FDA was approved as an amendment to HINTS 4 by the NIH Office of Human Subjects Research on June 4, 2014 (Exempt #5810).

HINTS 4, Cycles 1-4 (2011-2014)

The HINTS 4 general population survey underwent expedited review and was approved by the Westat IRB on November 11, 2010 (Project #8861.01.04). HINTS 4 received a “Not Human Subjects Research” determination from the NIH Office of Human Subjects Research on June 21, 2011 (Exempt #5810).

HINTS 3 (2007-2008)

The HINTS 3 general population survey underwent expedited review and was approved by the Westat IRB on April 26, 2006 (Project #8137.04). HINTS 3 was also designated an “exempt” research activity by the NIH Office of Human Subjects Research on June 27, 2007 (Exempt #3774).

HINTS 2 (2005)

The HINTS 2 general population survey was designated "exempt research” under 45 CFR 46.101 and approved by the Westat IRB on April 8, 2004 (Project #7845). HINTS 2 was also designated an “exempt” research activity by the NIH Office of Human Subjects Research on May 21, 2004 (OHSR #2684).

HINTS 1 (2003)

The HINTS 1 general population survey was designated "exempt research” under 45 CFR 46.101 and approved by the Westat IRB on January 16, 2002 (MPA M-1531). HINTS 1 was also designated an “exempt” research activity by the NIH Office of Human Subjects Research.
